March was for Stories, Steam & Surprises

March has been a strong one. A few standout favourites, a couple of “what was that?” moments, and a noticeable theme… slightly steamier than expected viewing (pure coincidence, obviously). So here’s what I’ve been watching this month.

I Swear (Film) Netflix

Had been waiting to watch this anyway as we had seen the 2009 documentary when it aired and were already fans of John Davidson MBE. But after the awards buzz and all the after-show chat, it became a must-watch.

I can honestly say it’s one of the best films I’ve seen in a long time. Brilliantly British, equal parts funny and emotional, and it really makes you think differently about disability, bullying and life choices. I’d like to think I’d have even a fraction of John’s outlook if dealt a similar hand, and Dotty is just incredible.

A proper real-life story that stays with you.

  • Vibe: inspiring + emotional
  • Best for: family watch with good life lessons

Being Gordon Ramsay (Series) Netflix

Another great family watch. I’ve always loved Gordon Ramsay - being Scottish and a Rangers fan definitely helps in this house.

It’s a really interesting behind-the-scenes look at both his work and family life, with some surprisingly emotional moments about his upbringing. It’s one of those series that reminds you just how far drive, ambition and a bit of boldness can take you.

Loved seeing his softer side and hoping to visit his new restaurant when we are in London this year.

  • Rating: 9/10
  • Vibe: driven + emotional
  • Best for: family or easy evening watch

The Night Agent (Series) Netflix

I watched the first two series previously and loved them, so had high hopes for this one. It was really good… but not quite on the same level for me.

I’ve seen other reviews saying this was the strongest and most action-packed series yet, but I actually think removing some of the romantic element took away from it. I like a bit of balance.

Tried watching in the shop and quickly realised this is definitely one you need to concentrate on.

  • Rating: 8/10
  • Vibe: fast-paced + tense
  • Best for: proper sit-down viewing
  • Multitask score: low

The Walsh Sisters (Series) BBC iPlayer

I’ve heard it’s not as good as the Marian Keyes books, but as I haven’t read them, I really enjoyed it.

It follows a family of Irish sisters, all dealing with their own chaos, alongside an awful mother and a brilliant father. It’s emotional in places, funny in others, and very character-driven.

Did have me briefly wondering if I’d missed out not having a sister… but quickly decided I’m more than happy with my big brother.

Lots of loose ends, so I’m hoping for another series.

  • Rating: 8/10
  • Vibe: family drama with humour
  • Best for: cosy home watch

Vladimir (Series) Netflix

Well… this was a disappointment.

I had high hopes for this - great cast, thought it would be a clever rom-com - but it just lacked substance. Quite predictable, and the ending was more annoying than satisfying.

The constant talking to camera (breaking the fourth wall, apparently) really grated on me. I know it’s a style choice, but it’s not for me.

Also not one for the shop… fairly raunchy in parts. Turns out I’m far too innocent for this kind of thing 😊

  • Rating: 4/10
  • Vibe: confusing + underwhelming
  • Best for: maybe skip

Gone (Series) ITVX

Absolutely loved this. This is my perfect kind of series - only six episodes, strong cast, gripping storyline.

Eve Myles can do no wrong in my opinion, and David Morrissey is brilliant (a very different role from Daddy Issues, which is also worth a watch for something lighter).

It’s a classic whodunnit centred around the murder of a teacher at an all-boys school. Some have said it’s slow, but I didn’t feel that at all.

  • Rating: 9/10
  • Vibe: gripping crime drama
  • Best for: delivery day binge

Virgin River (Series) Netflix

We are now on Series 7… and I still have mixed feelings.

It’s definitely a slow burner and probably could have been wrapped up much earlier, but there’s something about it that keeps you watching. The characters pull you in and it’s very easy viewing.

Slightly cheesy and, at times, surprisingly steamy. As always, all the drama happens in the final five minutes, so of course I’ll be watching the next series.

I’m too invested now not to.

  • Rating: 7/10
  • Vibe: cosy + mildly dramatic
  • Best for: background watching
  • Multitask score: high

A Woman of Substance (Series) Channel 4

Loved this.

It follows a woman who starts as a maid and builds herself into a hugely successful businesswoman. The timeline moves between past and present, and while some of her choices are… questionable, it makes for great viewing.

Loved that she is a strong female shopowner (very relatable🤣) and even better that parts were filmed in Beamish, which we’ve visited as a family (See banner images).

If there isn’t another series (which I don't think there is), the ending will leave you raging - but still a standout for me this month.

Also prompted the comment from my husband: “Does everything you watch have sex in it?”… which, at the moment, I can’t fully argue with.

  • Rating: 10/10
  • Vibe: powerful + addictive
  • Best for: sofa series

Overall March Takeaway

A strong month. I Swear completely stole the show, Gone delivered the perfect crime fix, and A Woman of Substance ticked all the boxes for drama and ambition.

A few disappointments along the way (Vladimir, I’m looking at you), but overall a solid mix of easy watching, emotional moments and a little more spice than expected.

Roll on April.

Next on My List

MAFS Australia and The Other Bennett Sister - both very different but both enjoyable so far.
